The SG Football Helmets Story

Simpson. Ganassi. Two men who know the meaning of high impact.

Auto racing isn’t for the faint of heart. Bill Simpson and Chip Ganassi, founders of SG Helmets, are both experienced racecar drivers who know the meaning of high impact. In a high-speed, dangerous sport like auto racing, the risk of serious injury is high. Both Simpson and Ganassi had serious accidents in their career that left them hospitalized.

Simpson and Ganassi began to revolutionize the auto racing industry by inventing new safety technologies, making auto racing safer than ever. They realized that their safety innovations shouldn’t be kept a secret.

That’s why Simpson and Ganassi came together to create a football helmet that would defy the odds and become the helmet with the best available protection on the market. SG is proud to introduce the SG Helmet for football players.

How SG Football Helmets Really Began

IT ALL STARTED WITH A RACING HELMET IN 1979.

The Simpson racing helmet was first introduced in 1979. It was a big hit. In the Indy 500 that year, almost 70% of drivers wore the helmet. The helmet afforded basic protection, featuring air vents and a new eye port that helped prevent broken noses. Things progressed over the next few decades and in 2008 that Simpson came out with a carbon fiber helmet. The modern racing helmet is designed with three layers. The outer shell is a hard resin made from carbon fiber, Kevlar®, and glass. The next layer is a special foam called polypropylene, which is intended to absorb energy. The innermost liner is made of a flame retardant materials. The strength of these helmets is tested by dropping various types of anvils on test helmets.

SIMPSON CREATED A WAY TO PROTECT DRIVERS FROM HIGH-SPEED IMPACTS WITH A HELMET THAT ABSORBED ENERGY.

Auto racing helmets – unlike football helmets – are designed for one impact only. The foam layer lining the inside of the helmet is designed to be crushed and break apart so that the foam completely absorbs the impact, protecting the driver’s skull. That means after one accident or one hard impact to the head, a racecar driver will throw a helmet away and get a new one. Because this formula works so well with sudden, sharp impacts, the polypropylene foam layer continues to be a standard for helmets in the auto racing industry.

SIMPSON & GANASSI REALIZED AUTO RACING WASN’T THE ONLY DANGEROUS SPORT, SO THEY TURNED THEIR ATTENTION TO FOOTBALL.

The head injury statistics in the NFL – and in other leagues – become more and more shocking as the years pass. Simpson and Ganassi both felt they couldn’t stand by and let the head injuries continue… not while they had unique technology available to them that had the power to drastically decrease risk of head injury. Finally, they decided to form SG Helmets and use the technology available to them that would help maximize protection for players on the field. After all, both Simpson and Ganassi knew the meaning of being involved in a high-impact sport.

THE RACING HELMET & THE FOOTBALL HELMET: SAME CONCEPT, DIFFERENT EXECUTION.

The concept behind the SG football helmet is completely different from any other concept seen in other football helmet brands. The SG helmet was created by auto racing experts. The basic formula for both helmets is the same. Both helmets share a hard outer layer, a foam lining layer and an interior padding of some kind.

While the formulas for the outermost and innermost layers are slightly different for the football helmet and the racing helmet, the most drastic difference between the two is in the foam liner that absorbs impact. For racing helmets, the foam is designed to crush and break apart on impact. For the SG football helmets, Bill Simpson developed a special kind of foam that maintains its shape but still absorbs the force of impact. That means that while a racing helmet is only good for one heavy impact, the SG football helmet can suffer thousands and thousands of impacts and the foam will still maintain its shape and absorb the force of impact.

WELCOME TO SG HELMETS

I understand that no helmet, practice apparatus, or helmet pad can completely prevent or eliminate the risk of concussions or other serious head injuries while playing sports. Researchers have not reached an agreement on how the results of impact absorption tests relate to concussions. No conclusions about a reduction of risk or severity of concussive injury should be drawn from impact absorption tests.  By entering this site, you acknowledge this statement.
